paper cuts and coffee stains

More products for Kaleido Konsthantverk!

The paper decorations are meant to hang in a window or a doorway. The sides fold out from the middle, I've sewn with green or red thread and they have a small tassle hanging down at the base :)

Below are coffee constellation cards. Made on good aquarelle paper with a Fineliner and then painted with instant coffee. I just love the warm brown color, effects – and smell!

paper treasure

Been binding some books lately.

I "found" my old paste paper stash from when I went to bookbinding school 10 years ago! We spent a whole week making wonderful papers to use as book covers. They turned out beautiful the whole lot, it was so much fun. I used to just bring them out to look at and then tuck them away again... they're like a treasure to me. Didn't want to spoil them. But now I've suddenly made up my mind to start using them. I love them, but they need to be used! So here goes, here's a first batch.

The books will soon be for sale at Kaleido!

In January I'll start as an active member again at Kaleido, after my year of resting membership (hasn't actually been all that restful, but good being able to concentrate on my suggestion for the public art commission and important family matters).

flux – vernissage!

"It's easy to have the image of recycled art as something rugged and for a deserving cause rather than interesting. This does not apply to Cecilia Levy's paper art where the book pages can be turned into cups, boots or other sculptural objects. So fragile, yet so powerful."
Thank you Sebastian Johans, glad to be mentioned in Upsala Nya Tidning!

Building the exhibition and preparing coffee constellation cards, for sale at Kaleido during the show.
There are always last minute preparations and I always feel at some point that I'm not going to make it. It's always the same procedure! I always make it on time, even if it's the last minute.

My mother, her friend, my aunt and a distant relative deep in discussion over a bowl

Happy!

Thank you all who visited my opening and welcome all who have yet to come!

Pressrelease

Dalgången, urholkningen i berget, blomkalken, svamphatten.

Böckerna återuppstår, fast i ny form.

solemn Saturday

the future looks bright!
Coy, Ludvig Ödman

Museum director Tomas Järliden, author Leif Zern and the artist herself Ulla Fries
Ulla Fries, Rockaägg, bronze 2010

Saturday offered brilliant weather and amazing art experiences.

First I went to Kaleido to attend the annual awarding of Kaleido's grant to a promising young crafter. This year it went to metalsmith Ludvig Ödman for his tender reflections of our perishable material world. Flanked by Kaleido curators Sigrid Ingela Blom and Elisabet Berg, Ludvig checks out the kaleidoscope awarded to him according to Kaleido traditions.

Next, I tagged along colleagues Ebba and Lisa to the grand opening of artist Ulla Fries exhibition at Bror Hjorts Hus. She depicts objects from nature and fantasy creatures with huge tenderness and sensitivity. I heard that she's a very slow worker, completing two etchings per year.

These two artistic expressions, however different, felt closely related somehow. Showing affection and respect for the world around them.

Merry Paraphrase and Happy New Plagiarism!

That's the title of our Christmas exhibition at Kaleido Konsthantverk.

Members and invited guest artists have been inspired by an assortment of old objects from Upplandsmuseet, the county museum, responsible for the cultural history and archaeology of Uppsala county. There were mittens, candlesticks, wall hangings, trimmings and decorations etc, 100–200 years old. All of which we were free to use as inspiration to reinvent new pieces.

Here is a small selection of what we came up with.

Elisabet Berg, trimmings made of beer cans

Lena Billingskogs massive wooden candle stick
Lina Holm, textile necklace (guest artist)
Lotta Hellström, ceramic
Lotta "Kraka" Persson, knitted fingerless gloves
Pernilla Sylvan (guest artist), candle sticks for birthday candles
Veronica Gardetoft, glass angels/schnapps glass when turned over :)
and my own paper mittens...
