daily thistles

Recently, I have been working on two public commissions. They are for a newly built library in Uppsala. The art work is to be placed inside two wooden boxes – cabinets with glass fronts. One box will contain these "thistles", and will be placed in the Math department.

Pics of the other one tomorrow..!

Ebba Stålhandske

Mattias and Ebba

Time flies and this weekend is the last chance to see the exquisite work by Kaleido colleague Ebba Stålhandske! A beautiful exhibition - you almost feel the scent of all the roses.

Ebba is a milliner (hat seamstress) and textile artist. In her exhibition Bland franska rosor (Among French roses) she shows textiles inspired by the Rose Garden in Blois, France.

Open until Sunday Sept. 16th, 12 - 16.

Many people love and collect shoes
and there are many hidden Imelda Marcos among us.
Historically shoes have often symbolized status and desire for power.
The rich could afford it, the poor had to go barefoot or in wooden shoes.
Why are shoes so important for our well-being?
A Cinderella’s dream?  Status? Passion?
In the art history we met van Gogh’s boots, Goya’s pointy silk shoes,
Degas’ ballet shoes, clogs by Gustave Courbet, Ball shoes by
Helene Schjerfbeck, the list can be long…

But what about the contemporary artists’ approach to shoes?

these boots are not made for walking

I started off with my own wellingtons. They served as moulds and were removed when the first paper layer was dry.
Then I tore book pages for strips. Three different books were used for slightly different coloring and typography.
Fringes were cut with scissors and each strip carefully curled.
Getting down to business.
I wanted a "hairy" look.  Strip after strip was pasted on...
...after strip
...after strip
...almost there!
I'm taking part of a group show at Galleri L2 in Stockholm and the theme is shoes! I'll show the finished pair here tomorrow :)
